Foundation for the Advancement of Scientific Research in Suriname

Welcome to SWOS

Our aim is to stimulate and advance scientific investigation in general and particular investigation on the medical field by:

Boosting the interest of scientists and scientists to be
Searching and providing funding
Evaluation of investigations and proposals for funding
Providing information on the usefulness of performing certain scientific investigation
Interact with organizations active on the field of scientific investigation
Assisting (young) researchers i.e with the design of a study or the writing of an article

How Do We Help?

The foundation itself can initiate research projects that are deemed relevant for Suriname, and seek after financial resources. In addition, the foundation wants to be a platform for presentation and discussion of results of scientific research. This will give an overview of current research in Suriname, and may stimulate other researchers to come forward with their results. Finally, the foundation will keep up contact and exchange information with organizations and agencies that perform or support scientific research.

Real Life. Real Knowledge. Real People

In the past twenty years, SWOS has initiated and also participated in several national and international research projects related to health in Suriname. Countries that we have had cooperations with, include the USA, the Netherlands, France and Brazil, we also cooperate with PAHO/WHO. Most studies resulted in publications in Scientific journals. Several young researchers from Suriname and elsewhere started their scientific career at SWOS. In Suriname, SWOS is currently one of the key institutions involved in research.

Meet the Team

The foundation’s board mainly consists of medical scientists from different disciplines. As an organization, we are responsible for conducting scientific research, which is primarily but not exclusively related to medicine. The organization also supports aspiring researchers in carrying out state of the art research in national, regional and global cooperations.
